Human Rights Day: Our Future Free from Racism

The Yukon Human Rights Commission is commemorating International Human Rights Day with an online and in-person learning event addressing systemic discrimination, racism and advocacy.

Event Details:

Date: Tuesday, December 10, 2024
Time: 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM (Yukon Standard Time)
Location: Yukonstruct (2180 2nd Ave, Whitehorse) & Online
Format: Hybrid (In-person and virtual attendance)
Cost: Free

A dynamic panel discussion between Toni DeMello and Chris Tse will be moderated by the former Director of the Yukon Human Rights Commission, Birju Dattani. Together, they will explore pressing human rights challenges and discuss pathways for meaningful change.

International Human Rights Day 2023

Join the Commission and the Council of Yukon First Nations to celebrate International Human Rights Day 2023!

You are invited to join a free, in-person film screening of Alanis Obomsawin’s We Can’t Make the Same Mistake Twice and a conversation with Shadelle Chambers, the Executive Director of the Council of Yukon First Nations.

This event will be held on Friday, December 8, 2023 at YukonStruct (2180 2nd Ave) in Whitehorse, Yukon from 6:00pm to 9:45pm Yukon Time. Doors will open at 5:40pm. Non-alcoholic beverages and snacks will be provided.

Black History Month 2023

Join the Commission to celebrate Black History Month in Canada!

You are invited to join a virtual movie screening of The Road Taken followed by a Q&A with the director of the film, Selwyn Jacob, on February 22^nd at 5:00 to 7:00 pm MST.

The Road Taken is a nostalgic ride through the 1900s about Black sleeping-car porters working on the Canadian railways. The film explores how anti-Black racism and discrimination affected the car-porters’ livelihoods, and portrays their fight for justice.

Policing in Canada: A Panel Discussion

On June 15th, 2021, Queer Yukon Society and the Yukon Human Rights Commission collaborated to host a webinar discussing policing in Canada. Panellists Chief Doris Bill (she/her), Duane Gastant’ Aucoin (he/him), and Rachel Bromburg (she/her) discuss the following questions, followed by a public Q&A.

1. What, from your perspective, are the primary issues with the traditional model of policing?

2. What alternatives to the traditional model of policing exist and how do these alternatives address some of the issues faced by various segments of the LGBTQIA2S+ community?
